We often hear that if a relative of ours has had breast cancer that we are more likely to develop breast cancer in the future. But is it true that having a family history of breast cancer leads to the development of breast cancer in the future?
Well, good news is that this is not true. Although having a genetic history of breast cancer increases your chances of developing breast cancer, this is not a guarantee that you will develop breast cancer. This just means that you are at a higher risk than those who do not have a genetic history of breast cancer. Also, only about 10% of women with breast cancer had a family history or genetic history of breast cancer. Thus, this supports the fact that although genes play an important role in breast cancer, it is mainly affected by our environment. This is why our lifestyle choices and the environments we surround ourselves in are so vital to our well-being.

While we can’t change our genes, we sure can change our lifestyle and environment to prevent the development of breast cancer or any disease for that matter. So make sure to treat your body right because it could be the difference between developing breast cancer and being cancer free.
